It’s been about 10 years now that every year I speak to the residents at the Canadian Film Centre. In a KeyNote presentation entitled Sound&Story, I use famous and favourite clips to illustrate the narrative power of sound in film, why sound works the way it does and how to plan for it in pre-production and production. It’s always a good group and I always emphasize that to help tell the story, sound has to be planned for in pre-production. Sound design is not so much a matter of creating nifty sound for a film, rather, it’s a matter of designing the film so sound can help tell the story. This is sound design and I always hope they get it.
